Gaming Lately: Battlefield 3

My time is split between a few games lately. One of them is Battlefield 3. Many of my friends have always said Battlefield is a game you play on the PC. I did play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on my 360 and loved it. I thought the campaign was fun and the characters were funny. The multiplayer while using a headset was a great time. I made some good friends on there. I even tried a bit of the PC version when the game was on sale on Steam late last year. It was cool but I really hated the menu screen for the game.

Now I'm playing the latest game in the Battlefield series and I'm having a great time. I can see myself playing this game for a very long time. The multiplayer is where this baby really shines. Something players of the previous games know all too well. The game is full of great moments such as running through a map only to see a jet plane get shot out of the sky and crash near you like something out of a movie. The rush of running into a group of opponents and taking down a couple then switching to your side arm on instinct and to come out of that short battle alive is a great feeling.

Then there is the campaign portion of Battlefield 3. Parts of it were interesting such as flying on the back seat of a jet and shooting targets both in the air and on the ground. The graphics are also great. But the delivery felt lacking in the end. Some of it does come off nicely and its worth at least one playthrough. They aimed for a movie experience in the game but it fell a bit short. Perhaps they should have taken a page from their Bad Company games. The stories were much better. If truth be told, Battlefield 3 is not a game you buy for the campaign but for the multiplayer anyway. On a side note I noticed during the ending credits of the campaign there is mention that there are product placements in the game. I didn't notice the product placements but if that's true it's unfortunate that EA decided to charge a full $60 for the PC version. Overall the campaign wasn't bad, but it just felt like it was made just to say, "Hey we made a campaign for the game just like our competition." What EA and some fans consider the competition are the Activision set of Modern Warfare games. The Battlefield and Modern Warfare titles are too different in my opinion. There is no one better than the other. You either like one of them or you like both.

Ultimately Battlefield 3 is a blast. My decision to get the PC version was a sound one and it's something I can definitely recommend to anyone who wants to get into the game. Just make sure you have a good computer that can run it.
