Gaming Lately: Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 3

Latest in the Call of Duty franchise from Activision is Modern Warfare 3. If you recall there was a bit of controversy concerning the developers Infinity Ward. If you want to read up on what exactly happened or what is yet to happen you can visit their Wiki Page. Despite missing most of the people that made up Infinity Ward the left over crew managed to complete the game with the assistance of another developer named Sledgehammer Games. It's a fairly solid game and a fun to play but you definitely get a feeling of been there and done that.

The campaign itself was solid and a decent ending to the story started up in Modern Warfare one. It's action packed and fast paced. You pick up right after the events of Modern Warfare 2 with Price and Soap disavowed and wanted by the world for what is perceived as terrorist acts by them. The main bad guy, Vladimir Makarov, is planning to expand on the war started in American and ready to turn it into World War III. If you are looking for closure this campaign pretty much ties it up.

I put a few hours into the multiplayer so far. I haven't tried all of it yet but playing it felt familiar if a bit faster. This is where I felt the game felt a lot like the previous Modern Warfare game. The maps also felt a bit lacking to me but I'm sure future map packs will bring in some classics maps which the fans love. Some added features which I liked is that taking down air support counts as a kill toward your kill streaks. Great idea which will encourage people to try to actually get rid of what can sometimes be a ridiculous amount of air support. Also the "Kill Confirmed" game mode was a nice touch.

If you are burned out on the Call of Duty series then pass on it or rent it. If you have some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket and you like this series of games you can't go wrong. While I'll play this game for a long time to come I'm not sure if I'd want another Call of Duty game after this. Activision will be releasing one Call of Duty title every year. Next up should be the same developer that bought you Call of Duty: Black Ops, Treyarch. More than likely it will be the Black Ops sequel.

One issue I did come up with was that the game stuttered and skipped when I would try to play. I ended up installing the game into my XBOX 360 and it seemed to fix the problem. There will more than likely be an update that fixes this in the future.
