DC's New 52 - Now That It's Not So New

For those of you who follow DC or comic books in general know that DC restarted their universe from scratch again. The whole point was to revive sales and get people interested in their books again. This would allow new and former readers a chance to read a comic book without worrying about previous history and not understanding what is happening right away. Heroes would be younger and more in tune with today's world.

We have titles such as Action Comics that tell the story of Clark Kent's early adventures before becoming Superman to the world. A great idea for those that want to see the Man of Steel not so super yet in Action Comics. A title I look forward to each month. Then there is the Superman title which is more present day and takes place a few years after Action Comics. Aquaman is a great title and the first issue still has me going back to read it again. It didn't go out to re-tell Aquaman from the ground up or his early adventures but instead relied on the first issue to tell you who Aquaman and what he is capable of while preparing his first adventure in the background. A very well executed book.

Aquaman and Mera

Green Lantern and Batman seemed to pick up pretty much where they left off in the old Universe. While I can understand why it was done that way I'm more disappointed that Batman couldn't have one title like Action Comics to give us the early days of Bruce Wayne. Maybe traveling the world and learning new things? Going out as a masked vigilanty not exactly like a bat but kind of aiming in that direction. Maybe it's not too late and DC can still go back a bit and decide to showcase early adventures for Batman.

Green Lantern I had less issue with since Hal returned not too long ago and his changes wouldn't be much. Also the movie came out which does help when it comes to his story. Only problem is that the first story arc, while good, may not be a good jumping point for young kids just starting out. They won't understand that after the movie Sinestro became the nemesis of Hal Jordan and started the Sinestro Corps. But as mentioned there is plenty of material out there to help catch up since Green Lantern made his return not too long ago. Plus there is an animated series and a recent movie anyway.

The JLA has been entertaining and so far I love how no one really knows each other. Batman is suspicious of everyone, Green Lantern has a huge Ego, Wonder Woman comes off innocent to the world but ready for a good scrap. Superman has a don't mess with me attitude and we are seeing the origins of Cyborg from teenage football star to cybernetic hero. It's well done and so far an action packed title.

Batgirls vs Nightwing

Other titles I've enjoyed so far are Deathstroke. Mindless voilence and entertaining but the story is taking a bit long to get to the point. Supergirl and Batgirl have been good. I especially enjoy Batgirl. A title that feels like it belongs in the new 52. Catwoman has also been enjoyable aside from that awkward sex scene with Batman. Just seemed a bit much for that comic.

Obviously not all books will be a great. I haven't been able to bring myself to pick up another issue of Animal Man or Static Shock since their first issues. Doesn't mean I won't give it a shot later on. It just means it didn't capture me right away. Animal Man may see me again after a few issues get released. I also really wanted to like Legion Lost but the current storyline feels like it's going at a snail's pace and the characters didn't feel very interesting at all. I enjoyed the older Legion Lost title but this new one needs a bit of help. I like the art and it has some very cool moments. But overall the first story arc is not very exciting for me.

Legion Lost

Same goes for the Flash. It just didn't hold my attention. Also the fact that it didn't feel like a new 52 title. Superboy has also felt a bit lacking unfortunately and I'm hoping it picks up soon. They've got some interesting ideas in there.

Overall I can say I'm okay with the new 52, but I do wish they'd kept it a bit tighter and started a Batman title with an equivalent to Action Comics. If there is one thing I'm noticing with most of the books I dropped or considering not purchasing anymore is that the stories are moving too slow for me. But dropping some titles will allow me to pick up other books I didn't get to see. Looking forward to trying Red Hood and the Outsiders. Will be interesting to see what 2012 brings for DC. I hope they don't relax too much. Marvel looks like they'll be hitting hard with their Avengers vs X-Men. And let's not forget how they are stopping a bunch of comics without much reason for doing so. Could be a big thing coming up. Lastly we will be seeing a oldie come back. Valiant Comics makes their return in 2012. So keep on your toes DC.
