The New 52's Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad has always been one of my favorite DC titles and I recently was able to catch up on the new series as part of the DC's new 52. What has always intrigued me is the concept of a convert government ops team consisting of unwilling super villains doing the government's dirty work. This formula was first created by writer John Ostrander in the mid to late 1980s shortly after Crisis of Infinite Earths. There's been several monthly titles as well as limited series with a wide variety of casts as members of the team changes often. The reason being is that the missions they often go on are detrimental to their well being. Toss in that with some back stabbing, and explosives that originally were shackled to them and now injected as a micro bomb into the neck in the new series.

The new series now on its fourth issue is by writer Adam Glass. There are a number of artists credited, but the main artists are Federico Dallocchio (1st, 2nd and 4th issue) and Cliff Richards (3rd issue). Ransom Getty, Scott Hanna, and Andrei Bressan are also credited as artists for the first two issues. The cover artist for the first two issues are R.B. with the third and fourth credited as Ken Lashley.

The cover art has been amazing, and the interiors fairly good matching the gritty stories told by Adam Glass. The B list super villains assembled includes Deadshot, El Diablo, Voltaic, Harley Quinn, Black Spider, and King Shark. After losing a couple of members by issue two, they're joined by Captain Boomerang and Yo Yo. It's interesting to see the membership constantly revolving and always guessing which of them will bite the dust and who will join them next. Their missions thus far has been relatively appealing. Missions like taking on a stadium full of robotic zombies. Glass stays consistent with Ostrander's high quality of writing and formula of mixing things up and keeping you want to read more. The only person I would bet on surviving long term in this series is Deadshot. The only thing I would hope for soon is that the team would take on some high power heroes or villains. Having B list super villains take on other B list super villains will only keep people's attention so far. Interesting side note is that Amanda Waller that runs the Suicide Squad has apparently gotten liposuction in the new 52.

Overall, I would highly recommend the series. I love Glass writing Harley Quinn especially. It's nice to see the more insane side of her instead of the softer version in Gotham City Sirens. The issues are not currently available in trade paperback form yet. Cover price for the issues are $2.99 each with most of them still available at stands at cover price.
