New 52's Fury of Firestorm

One of my latest DC's New 52 reads is The Fury of Firestorm which unlike some of the other New 52 books really recreates the super hero as we know him. The first tell tale sign would be the under title of "The Nuclear Men" as suppose to "The Nuclear Man." Both of the would be super heroes are no strangers to Firestorm lore as Jason Rusch and Ronnie Raymond both become "a" Firestorm in the first issue and even something greater.

Ronnie Ramond if you're not familar was the original Firestorm with Jason Rusch his sucessor after Ronnie's death. We've seen them work together before after Ronnie's return during Blackest Night. But writers Ethan Van Sciver and Gail Simone chose to create a new origin for the New 52. Ethan Van Sciver better known for his art, does the covers for The Fury of Firestorm. Gail Simone is known for such great writing as Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman. Besides The Fury of Firestorm, she also handles the writing duty for the Batgirl in the New 52.

So in the new 52, both Ronnie and Jason are high school students at the same school in opposite worlds. Ronnie being a star quarterback and Jason a genius that works for the school paper. Professor Martin Stein in this continuity is a cofounder of the "God particle" that allows humans to be a Firestorm. He's painted by the US government as a traitor for trying to sell it to every nation including those unfriendly to the U.S. Stein's theory is that if every country had a Firestorm there would be no need for armies or other weapons. Every nation would be on an equal footing eliminating the need for war. We learn within the first four issues that Martin is murdered by the same people that now attempt to retrieve the particle left by Stein to Jason whom he's been in contact with. When those government mercenaries attack the school, Jason uses the particle in the presence of Ronnie and a few others resulting in Jason and Ronnie becoming a Firestorm each. One of the female mercenaries appear to become a future Killer Frost.

As Firestorms, both Ronnie and Jason gets into a confrontation as they have no love for each other with the classic jock vs. geek scenario. They soon find themselves as Fury which you can say is a Firestorm Hulked up. Both Ronnie and Jason are inside of Fury but only as onlookers since Fury has a mind of its own. Only when Fury takes on a tougher foe in issue four do we see that Jason reaches out to Fury and take control of him in order to fight in a more tactical manner rather than just mindlessly smashing!

There are many more interesting developments that I don't want to spoil but this series thus far has been a very interesting read. Gail Simone has always been a very strong writer and I wonder what parts of the book are her contribution and which are Ethan Van Sciver's. While DC also has another nuclear powerhouse in Captain Atom, I've always found Firestorm to be more interesting because of the conflicts between Professor Stein and Ronnie. This conflict is captured again thus far between Jason and Ronnie and should continue to be a good read. Overall, I would highly recommend this comic book. The issues have a cover price of $2.99 and is currently not available in trade paperback yet only as back issues.
